It’s only the second time that a Grime artist wins the Mercury Prize! A consecration for the British music genre and a step forward forits worthy representativeSkepta!Last night, Sept 15, the British Nigerian rapper took home one of the most remarkable prize in the music industry. Why is it so hard toget ? Well the Mercury Prize rewards the best British album of the past twelve months, all genres combines. Skepta was nominated for his album Konnichiwa, and artists such as the late David Bowie, Radiohead, Savages or Laura Mvula made the shortlist.Here is the full list :Hopelessness (Anohni), The Bride (Bat for Lashes), Blackstar (David Bowie), Making Time (Jamie Woon), Made in the Manor (Kano), The Dreaming Room (Laura Mvula),A Moon Shaped Pool (Radiohead), Adore Life (Savages), Konnichiwa (Skepta), I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (The 1975), Channel the Spirits (The Comet is Coming).In 2014, Young Fathers won the prize with Dead, an experimental album with hip hop influences.In 2015, the jury rewarded British-French Benjamin Clementine for his soul-folk album At Least for Now :This year, grime came back to prosper thanks to Skepta. These past few months, his hits “Shutdown” and “That’s Not Me” were real party anthems out here inEurope.This victory proves that Grime music isn’t dead yet : last time a grime album won it was Dizzee Rascal’sBoy In Da Cornerin 2003 ; more than ten years ago.“I’ve been trying to do this music stuff and work it out for so long, but it was the moment where like, yo, let’s dothis for ourselves, for our family,” he said upon receivingthe award.“We travelled the world, no record label, nothing.
