While many footballers go into punditry, coaching after football, some take the rather unconventional route of becoming actors.For the sake of this article we are only considering those with more than one acting credit to their names so sorry Ian Wright and Ally McCoist. Here are six footballers who became successful actors;
1. Vinnie Jones
The most successful footballer turned actor out there. Played for Leeds and Chelsea in the Premier League and raking up to 350 apperances in tghe top division.Has appeared in films such as Guy Ritchie’s Brit Gangster flicks, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch where he played the invincible Bullet Tooth Tony. He appeared as a disgraced footballer inMean Machines and became a worldwide sensation with X-Men: The Last Stand.
2. Eric Cantona
The Manchester United legend stared in Shekar Kapur’s Oscar winning, ‘Elizabeth’ (1998).He’s already acted in over two dozen movies French movies and even played a version of himself in ‘Looking for Eric’ (2009). His latest movie is the upcoming Western, ‘The Salvation’ starring Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green.
3. Carlo Ancelotti
The 1983, Italian comedy, The World of Don Camillo, was about a priest who coaches the town’s football team in a match an “evil” team aptly named the “Devils”.Ancelotti played a footballer on the “Devils” who has more than a handfulof nasty tricks up his sleeve that are ignored by the corrupt referee
The Bayern Munich coach also madea cameo in new Star Trek Beyond movie as a ship doctor.
4. Pele
The football legend appeared in the famous ‘Escape to Victory / Victory’ (1981). He can also be seen in ‘A Minor Miracle’ (1983) where he helps a bunch of orphans trying to save their home while in the ‘Hotshot’ (1987) he plays an American soccer player trying to make it big turns to Pele for inspiration and guidance.
5. David Beckham
The Englishman who has made America his new home made appearances in the three Goal films from 2005 to 2009.He also recently appeared in a special episode of the British comedy sitcom, ‘Only Fools and Horses’, taking a pot-shot at his modelling career.When asked if he’d be taking up acting as a full time profession, he replied describing himself as being “too stiff”.
6. Paul Breitner
Paul Breitner holds the record as oneof only four players to have scored intwo different World Cup final matches, the others being Pelé, Vavá and Zinédine Zidane.Regarded as one of the best players ever, he appeared in two action adventure films, with one being a German language western. In the 1976 spaghetti-western ‘Potato Fritz’ he played a frontier soldier and in 1986 he starred in the action-adventure, Kunyonga – Mord in Afrika.
