An AlbumSellswhen fans believe theHypes, but itFadesaway fast when it’s not of qualityType.It’s been a very busy year so far in Nigeria’s music industry. Unlike previous years, efforts by a good number of Nigerian artistes to release albums have been quite commendable. Album release is a big musical project in which its success largely depends on the lasting impression created in the music space long after release. In as much as we would like to appreciate the efforts of the artistes that have made conscious efforts to release an album this year, it is, however, imperative to point out some heavily hyped albums that really didn’t live up to expectations. Despite the hype these albums fade off the music scene almost as soon as they came. In no particular order, here are 5 albums that really didn’t live up to their hype.
1. SKALES – NEVER SAY NEVER GUY
Despite his seemingly dwindling music career, Skales still managed to be active this year in the music industry with the release of his “The Never Say Never Guy” album. The 17 tracks album with 3 bonus track which was released in May this year featured Phyno, Wande Coal,Timaya, Davido and a host of other industry big guns. Despite the pre-release buzz about the album, it’s still hard to point out one song off the Album still enjoying much-required wave. Therefore, all the promotional hype was nothing but a joke.
2. JESSE JAGS – ODYSSEUS
One of Nigeria’s prolific rapper and CEO of Jagz Nation, Jesse Jagz unveiled his most anticipated Album of the year titled “Odysseus“ in September this year.The entire hype around the album not only preached the big return of Jesse Jags after the whole Chocolate city politics, it was also hyped around the restoration of Rap Hope in the music industry.It just too heartbreaking that the 10 tracks Album didn’t really deliver on that front.
3. D’BANJ – KING DON COME
King Dbanj, Eja Nla decided to come back with a solo project this year after taking a break from music to other business enterprises.To prove he’s still the King in the game and to further cement that kingship status in the industry, DBanj dropped off a 12 track afro-pop album.Out of all the 12 tracks, only songs like, ‘El Chapo’ ft Gucci Mane, Wande Coal, ‘Turn Down For What (Focus)’ and ‘Ntswempu’ ft Bucie and Busiswa are really worth Kingship picture Dbanj was trying to paint with the album, the rest are mere fillers.
4. KOREDE BELLO – BELLOVED
This one is laughable! When you rush to release an album all because of the success of few singles you might just end up hurting your own career.Sorry to say, the overhyped Korede Bello’s “Belloved” album was dead on arrival.
5. YCEE – FIRST WAVE
He called this an EP and tagged it FIRST WAVE.Honestly, this is a good debut project for YCEE but not up to the standard expected from his brand.Of the truth, YCEE himself is bigger than this 8 tracks EP.
