A simple car ride with her 18-year-old nephew has sparked optical consciousness for tennis player Serena Williams.A lot of celebrities have decided to speak up regarding the multiple cases of racist crime and police brutality that have targeted black youth (men and women) in the United States. From Jay Z to Beyoncé, Alica Keys, Lenny Kravitz or Willow Smith, many stars have committed through viral campaigns or fundraising events and that is more than necessary. Inthe sports world, athletes too are beginning to mobilize…Champion Serena Williams has long been on the side of those who’d rather not speak up. But a simple car ride with a family member made her changer her mind. On her Facebook page, the athlete recalled being in the car with her 18-year-old nephew and how she felt when they drove by police officers. At that moment sheremembered that viral video of a young woman recording live her boyfriend’s death after he was shotby a policeman.Serena Williams” All of this went through my mind in a matter of seconds. I even regretted not driving myself. I would never forgive myself if something happenedto my nephew. He’s so innocent. I than wondered than have I spoken up? I had to take a look at me. What about my nephews? What if I have a son and what about mydaughters?” she wrote in her post.Hopefully other artists will join her and help bring awareness to socialinjustice in the States…
