Yesterday, November 2, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) met and approved eight new private universities. This brings the number of private varsities in Nigeria to 69.Professor Anthony Onwuka who is the minister of state for education, told journalists that the approval wasbased on recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC).He also explained that each of the universities was given a three-year provisional licence and would be mentored by an older university. Below are the approved universities and their locations:
1. Anchor University
Anchor university
Anchor university will be located in Ayobo, Lagos state. The university is owned by popular church, Deeper Christian Life Ministry under their overseer Pastor W. F. Kumuyi.The university is to be mentored by the University of Lagos. There are five faculties in the university:
– Faculty of Art
– Faculty of Education
– Faculty of Social Science
– Faculty of Humanities
– School of Management and Accounting.
2. Arthur Jarvis University
Arthur Javis university
Arthur Jarvis university of science and technology is a new university under construction. It is located in Akpabuyo, which is just 10 minutes drive from Calabar the state capital ofAkwa Ibom, Nigeria. It is owned by The Glitter House Nigeria Limited, and it is to be mentored by the University of Calabar.
3. Clifford University
Clifford University
Clifford University is located at Ihie, Owerrinta, Abia state, it is owned by Seventh Day Adventist Church, to be mentored by the University of Agriculture, Umudike, Umuahia.
4. Coal City university
Coal City University
Coal City university is located at Achi street, Enugu, Nigeria it is owned by African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education, Enugu, and it is to be mentored by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
5. Crown-Hill University
Crown Hill University
The chancellor of Crown-Hill university is Engineer Frank Morgan Akpan, the university is owned by Modern Morgy and Sons limited and located at Eiyenkorin, Kwara state. The university is to be mentored by the University of Ilorin.
6. Dominican University
Dominican University
The Dominican University is located in Ibadan. It is a university with a Catholic identity offering quality educational programmes in various courses and admission without discrimination as to religion, sex, nationality or ethnicity. It is owned by Order of Preachers, Nigerian Dominican Community and the university is to be mentored by the University of Ibadan.
7. Kola Daisi University
Kola Daisi University is located in Ibadan it is owned by Kola Daisi Foundation and the new university is to be mentored by the University of Ibadan.
8. Legacy University
Legacy universityLegacy University is located in Okija, Anambra state, it is owned by the Good Idea Education Foundation andit is to be mentored by Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Akwa.Professor Onwuka also said that the universities were approved to give opportunity to the admission-seekersin the country.He said the monitoring of the new universities would be implemented by the federal ministry of education and the NUC as required by the 2004 Education Act.
